The Islamic position
Islam attaches sex to commitment because the consequences — children, attachment, disease, grief — arrive whether or not anyone agreed to them.
Analysis
The UK Health Security Agency publishes annual sexually transmitted infection data for England; its recent reports record gonorrhoea diagnoses at the highest level since reporting began in 1918 and infectious syphilis at levels not seen since the 1940s. That is an official source and worth citing precisely. On psychological effects, the literature is genuinely mixed and you must not overstate it: studies find that outcomes depend heavily on motivation and expectation, with the clearest negative effects among those who hoped for a relationship, and researchers such as Zhana Vrangalova have published findings on both sides. The strongest form of the Islamic argument is therefore not "casual sex makes you depressed" but that a consent-only ethic underdetermines the situation: both parties can consent to an encounter and only one of them intend what it means, and consent has nothing to say about the child, the disease, or the person who wanted more. Islam's positive proposal is the one to lead with — Q 17:32 forbids approaching zina, and the Prophetic instruction (Sahih al-Bukhari 5065) pairs the prohibition with the remedy: marry, and if you cannot, fast. Deliver this without any interest in the listener's history.

وَلَا تَقْرَبُوا الزِّنَا ۖ إِنَّهُ كَانَ فَاحِشَةً وَسَاءَ سَبِيلًا
Do not go near zina. It is an immorality and an evil way.
وَلَا يَزْنُونَ
