Repentance is always open

The claim being examined

People assume that a religion with strict sexual ethics must be crushing to anyone who has fallen short of them.

The Islamic position

The Qur'an addresses those who have wronged themselves with the most expansive language in the book, and forbids despair outright.

Analysis

This card exists to prevent a specific failure: delivering a prohibition to someone who is already carrying shame. Q 39:53 is addressed to those who have wronged themselves and instructs them not to despair, stating that God forgives all sins. Q 25:68-70 lists the gravest sins — associating partners with God, murder, zina — and then says that whoever repents, believes and does righteous work will have their evil deeds exchanged for good ones. The Prophet, peace be upon him, said that the one who repents from sin is like one who has no sin (Sunan Ibn Majah 4250, graded hasan by some and weak by others — cite the Qur'anic material as the proof and mention this as a well-known report). Two practical points. There is no priest and no confession in Islam: repentance is direct, private and requires only sincerity, cessation, remorse and resolve, with restitution where another person was wronged. And exposing one's own sin is discouraged — the Prophet, peace be upon him, warned against the mujahirun, those who sin and then publicise it (Sahih al-Bukhari 6069). If someone discloses something to you, the correct response is confidentiality and hope, not a ruling.
