Who made you?
Handle with care. Do not turn it into a debate about cosmology you cannot finish. Ask the question and let them think.

The claim being examined
The Qur'an poses a short question about origins: were you created from nothing, or did you create yourselves?
The Islamic position
Muslims hold that once the options are laid out, an uncreated Creator is the reasonable answer rather than a leap of faith.
Analysis
Q 52:35-36 puts three options on the table and lets the listener rule two of them out: a thing that need not have existed does not bring itself into being, and a chain of such causes running back forever never explains why anything is here at all. Scholars call this the argument from contingency (from things that did not have to exist). Keep it in ordinary words in conversation; the fuller treatment is in the public article on rational belief in God.

أَمْ خُلِقُوا۟ مِنْ غَيْرِ شَىْءٍ أَمْ هُمُ ٱلْخَـٰلِقُونَ
am khuliqū min ghayri shayin am humu l-khāliqūna
Were they created by nothing, or were they the creators? Or did they create the heavens and the earth? No — they are not certain.
