The challenge nobody answered
Handle with care. Never quote an English rendering as proof of the Arabic claim. And do not tell someone they must learn Arabic to be guided.

The claim being examined
The Qur'an openly challenged its opponents to produce something like it — and they were the most language-proud people of their age.
The Islamic position
Their failure to meet a literary challenge, when they had every motive to, is offered as evidence that the book is not of human authorship.
Analysis
The argument (tahaddi) is stated at Q 2:23, 10:38, 11:13 and 17:88. Its persuasive force is literary and historical rather than statistical: the historical premise is that a hostile, highly literate audience with strong motive did not produce a widely accepted rival composition. The classical treatment is al-Khattabi's Bayan I'jaz al-Qur'an, held in the Go deeper group of this section. To a non-Arabic speaker the honest framing is: this is why Arabic speakers found it compelling, not a claim you can verify through a translation.
From the Qur'an
Qur'an 2:23
فَأْتُوا بِسُورَةٍ مِّن مِّثْلِهِ
Then produce a chapter like it, and call your witnesses besides God, if you are truthful.
Qur'an 17:88
قُل لَّئِنِ اجْتَمَعَتِ الْإِنسُ وَالْجِنُّ
Say: if mankind and jinn gathered to produce the like of this Qur'an, they could not produce the like of it.
