The claim being examined

The Qur'an is preserved by memorisation as well as by writing — millions of people hold the entire book by heart.

The Islamic position

This living chain of memory is unusual among the world's scriptures, and it began in the Prophet's own lifetime.

Analysis

The institution of hifz with a documented chain (sanad) of transmission from teacher to student is historically continuous and independently observable. It is an unusually strong claim precisely because it is testable now: unlike appeals to ancient manuscripts, a listener can attend a mosque during Ramadan and hear the entire text recited from memory. Do not attach invented statistics to it.

وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا الْقُرْآنَ لِلذِّكْرِ

And We have certainly made the Qur'an easy to remember.
