The claim being examined

The Qur'an is preserved by memorisation as well as by writing — millions of people hold the entire book by heart.

The Islamic position

This living chain of memory is unusual among the world's scriptures, and it began in the Prophet's (SAW) own lifetime.

Analysis

Hifz (memorising the whole Qur'an) is taught with a sanad — a documented chain from teacher back to teacher — and that chain is unbroken and open to inspection. It is an unusually strong point precisely because it can be tested today: unlike an appeal to ancient manuscripts, a listener can walk into a mosque in Ramadan and hear the entire book recited from memory. Do not attach invented statistics to it.
