9 — Fine-tuning: necessity, chance or design

Handle with care. Do not stack 10^40, 10^100 and 10^500 as measured odds; they concern different models.

In short

The claim being examined

Life-permitting physical conditions call for explanation; design is one candidate alongside necessity and chance-selection models.

The Islamic position

The Qur'an presents cosmic order as a sign for reflection, not a numerical trick that forces belief.

Analysis

Rees and Davies discuss life-sensitive cosmological features without agreeing design follows. Collins develops design; Sober challenges probability assignments. A multiverse can reduce surprise if it generates varied domains, though its mechanism has laws of its own. This is inference to the best explanation, not mathematical proof.

From the Qur'an

مَّا تَرَىٰ فِي خَلْقِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ مِن تَفَاوُتٍ ۖ فَارْجِعِ الْبَصَرَ هَلْ تَرَىٰ مِن فُطُورٍ

Ma tara fi khalqi al-Rahmani min tafawut. Farji'i al-basara hal tara min futur.

You do not see in the creation of the Most Merciful any inconsistency. Look again: do you see any breaks?
