Answering Objections to Islam · Fulfilled Prophecies of Muhammad
A world where no one escapes interest
Handle with care. This is a mid-strength card. Do not open with it; use it as reinforcement after the Byzantine and Bedouin cards.
In short
- 1.Interest was known in antiquity, but confined and widely condemned
- 2.The hadith predicts universality, including unwilling participants
- 3.Modern life makes complete avoidance practically impossible: banking, mortgages, pensions, sovereign debt
- 4.Islamic finance exists precisely because Muslims must navigate a system built on it
The claim being examined
The Prophet said a time would come when people consume interest, and whoever does not take it will still be touched by its dust.
The Islamic position
The second clause is the remarkable part: not merely that usury would spread, but that avoidance would become impossible.
Analysis
Judge this one carefully against the predictability test. That lending at interest would continue was predictable; that it would become the structural basis of a global economy such that even abstainers are affected by "its dust" was not. Present the second clause as the claim, and let them decide whether it describes the present accurately. Do not lean on the first clause alone — it would not clear the bar you set earlier.
From the Qur'an
Qur'an 2:275
وَأَحَلَّ اللَّهُ الْبَيْعَ وَحَرَّمَ الرِّبَا
God has permitted trade and forbidden interest.
From the Bible
Exodus 22:25
Hebrew
If you lend money to one of my people among you who is needy, do not treat it like a business deal; charge no interest.
Read it in their BibleFrom the Sunnah
Sunan Abu Dawud 3331 · Hasan
A time will come upon mankind when they will consume interest. It was said: all of the people? He said: whoever does not take from it will be afflicted by its dust.
