When the sexes are treated as interchangeable

The Islamic position
Islam holds that male and female are a created reality (Q 53:45) with real differences, and that recognising them is not an insult to either.
Analysis
Keep this card at the level of principle and keep it kind. The Qur'an states the creation of the pair — male and female — as a divine act (Q 53:45-46, Q 92:3, Q 49:13), and Islamic law is built on that distinction in matters of prayer, marriage, inheritance and burial. The intellectual dispute in the modern academy runs from Simone de Beauvoir's claim that one is not born but becomes a woman (The Second Sex, 1949) through Judith Butler's account of gender as performative (Gender Trouble, 1990); it is a philosophical position with serious critics inside secular philosophy as well as outside it. What Islam adds is not merely a competing intuition but a claim about creation: the categories are given, not constructed, and denying them is denying something God made. Three disciplines are essential in conversation. First, this is a discussion about ideas; a person who is struggling with their identity is owed compassion and privacy, not a debate. Second, do not mock, do not use slurs, and do not repeat mocking material from the internet — Q 49:11 forbids ridicule outright. Third, know when to decline the conversation: if it cannot be had calmly, leave it, because the harm of an ugly exchange outweighs any point scored.
