The Islamic position
Hijab is commanded in the Qur'an, addressed to men first, and chosen by millions of women in societies where nobody compels them.
Analysis
The Qur'anic sequence is the argument. Q 24:30 addresses believing men: lower your gaze and guard your chastity. Only then does Q 24:31 address believing women with the parallel command plus the instruction to draw their khimar over the chest. Q 33:59 gives a stated purpose — that they be recognised and not molested. The classical consensus on the obligation is well established across the four schools, with a documented minority discussion about the face covering specifically. On the sociological question, the honest picture is mixed and should be given as such. In Britain, France and North America, hijab is worn by women who face social cost for it rather than compulsion — the French law of 2004 banning conspicuous religious symbols in state schools and the 2010 face-covering ban run in the opposite direction. In Iran, hijab is enforced by the state, and the protests following the death of Mahsa Amini in 2022 are a real and serious counter-example that should not be waved away; state compulsion in religion is contrary to Q 2:256, and Muslims should say so. Equally, family coercion happens in some Muslim households and is wrong. The strongest move in conversation is to ask whether a woman covering by choice, at social cost, is being oppressed by the covering or by the reaction to it.

And let them draw their head-coverings over their chests.
لَا إِكْرَاهَ فِي الدِّينِ
There is no compulsion in religion.
