What Islam does not concede

The claim being examined
Muslims under pressure sometimes reshape Islamic teaching to fit the surrounding culture, presenting Islam as identical to modern liberal values.
The Islamic position
Honesty is more persuasive than accommodation. Islam agrees with modern ethics in many places, differs in others, and should say which is which.
Analysis
This card is directed at Muslims as much as at anyone else. The temptation to apologise the religion into the shape of the audience is understandable and counter-productive: it invites the next demand, it misrepresents the tradition, and it fails the Qur'anic standard of speaking the truth with wisdom (Q 16:125) rather than speaking whatever will be accepted. The distinction to hold is between explaining and conceding. Explaining means giving the reasoning, the classical commentary and the honest scholarly disagreement — which is exactly what these cards do on Q 4:34, inheritance and testimony. Conceding means claiming the text does not say what it says. The former is scholarship; the latter is dishonesty, and people can tell. There is also a warning in the other direction: a Muslim who states positions harshly, or who leads with the most contested rulings when nobody asked, is also failing the method. The Prophet, peace be upon him, was not obscene, cursing or indecent (Sahih al-Bukhari 6035), and Q 3:159 attributes the gathering of people around him to gentleness. Firm content, gentle delivery, no edits to the text.
From the Qur'an
فَبِمَا رَحْمَةٍ مِّنَ اللَّهِ لِنتَ لَهُمْ ۖ وَلَوْ كُنتَ فَظًّا غَلِيظَ الْقَلْبِ لَانفَضُّوا مِنْ حَوْلِكَ
By mercy from Allah you were gentle with them. Had you been harsh and hard-hearted, they would have scattered from around you.
وَلَا يَجْرِمَنَّكُمْ شَنَآنُ قَوْمٍ عَلَىٰ أَلَّا تَعْدِلُوا ۚ اعْدِلُوا هُوَ أَقْرَبُ لِلتَّقْوَىٰ
Do not let hatred of a people lead you to injustice. Be just; that is nearer to God-consciousness.
From the Sunnah
The Prophet, peace be upon him, was not one who was obscene, nor one who cursed, nor one who spoke indecently.
