The claim being examined

It is easy to slide from a real critique into nostalgia, conspiracy or blanket condemnation of the modern world.

The Islamic position

The credible position accepts the benefits, cites named sources, concedes contested evidence, and criticises use rather than existence.

Analysis

A discipline card for the module. Four rules. First, no blanket condemnation: the tools that carry the Qur'an to a billion phones, connect a diaspora to its scholars and enable this conversation are the same tools, and Islamic law has no category prohibiting a technology as such. Second, cite named sources with years, and where the evidence is contested — as with social media and adolescent mental health — say so, because your listener may know the Odgers and Przybylski critiques of Haidt and will discount everything else you said if you hid them. Third, avoid conspiracy framing; the documented business model is a stronger argument than any allegation of hidden intent. Fourth, refuse nostalgia. There was no golden era of universal piety, Muslim societies have always had their own failings, and the Qur'anic critique of heedlessness in Q 102 and Q 57:20 is addressed to humanity in every age, not to the twenty-first century in particular. The argument is that technology intensifies old human tendencies — accumulation, gossip, envy, distraction — that revelation had already named, which is a stronger claim than novelty.
