Analysis
The UK government appointed a minister for loneliness in 2018 following the Jo Cox Commission, and the Office for National Statistics has published loneliness measures showing that a significant minority of adults report feeling lonely often or always, with rates notably high among 16 to 24 year olds — a finding that surprises people and is worth stating precisely. The Campaign to End Loneliness collates the research base. Avoid asserting that social media causes loneliness; the evidence points to a complex relationship and displacement of in-person contact is only one candidate mechanism. The Islamic material is about obligation rather than sentiment. Congregational prayer carries a stated multiplication of reward over praying alone (Sahih al-Bukhari 645), the Friday prayer is obligatory on men and gathers a neighbourhood weekly, and visiting the sick, attending funerals and answering invitations are listed among the rights a Muslim owes another Muslim (Sahih al-Bukhari 1240). The point to make is that these are duties with locations and times attached; a religion that requires you to show up in a room repeatedly produces community as a by-product, whether or not anyone feels sociable.
