The claim being examined
The destruction of non-standard codices is presented as evidence of a cover-up.
The Islamic position
The reason given in the sources is the opposite of concealment: disputes over recitation had begun in the garrison cities, and the standardisation was carried out openly to end them. Uthman's own community recorded that he did it, and why.
Analysis
The report in Bukhari 4987 gives motive, procedure and dissent in one passage. Ali's recorded endorsement — that he would have done the same — matters because Ali is the figure with the strongest political motive to condemn Uthman. A genuine cover-up requires the suppression of the record of the cover-up; here the record was preserved, taught and made canonical.
