The Uthmanic Recension

The claim being examined

Sahih al-Bukhari 4987 records Uthman commissioning a standard codex and ordering other manuscripts destroyed. Critics argue a perfectly preserved text would need no such intervention.

The Islamic position

The Uthmanic project standardised orthography and eliminated dialectal recitational divergence across a rapidly expanding empire. It is a documented, dated, publicly-conducted editorial act carried out within twenty years of the Prophet's death, by a committee including Zayd ibn Thabit, his own scribe.

Analysis

The methodological point is that Islam's own canonical sources document the editorial history transparently, with names, dates and procedure. There is no comparable documentary record for the fixing of the New Testament text; the fourth-century emergence of Sinaiticus and Vaticanus has no minutes. Marijn van Putten's orthographic work argues that shared, arbitrary spelling idiosyncrasies across the earliest manuscript tradition point to a single written archetype — precisely the Uthmanic codex the tradition describes.
