The claim being examined
If the Qur'an was revealed in seven modes (ahruf), critics ask which one is the Qur'an, and treat the doctrine as a retroactive device to absorb textual variation.
The Islamic position
The ahruf are recorded in the Prophet's own lifetime as a concession for the dialects of the Arabs. The hadith describes Umar and Hisham reciting differently, both being confirmed correct by the Prophet himself — the variation is licensed at the source, not invented later.
Analysis
Scholars from al-Tabari onward disputed the precise definition of harf, and that internal disagreement is worth conceding openly. What is not disputed is the chronology: the reports establishing licensed variation are early and canonical, which means variation was theologically anticipated rather than retrofitted. Distinguishing this from biblical textual variation matters — ahruf variation is authorised at the point of revelation and transmitted through named, continuous chains of oral licence, whereas scribal variation is unauthorised and detected only by comparing copies.
