The Seven Ahruf

In short

The claim being examined

If the Qur'an came down in seven modes of recitation, people ask which one is really the Qur'an — and treat the whole idea as something invented later to explain away differences.

The Islamic position

The seven modes are recorded in the Prophet's (SAW) own lifetime, given as an allowance for the different dialects of the Arabs. In the , Umar hears Hisham reciting differently, takes him to the Prophet (SAW), and both are told they are right. The variation was permitted at the source, not invented afterwards.

Analysis

Scholars from al-Tabari onwards disagreed about what exactly a "mode" is. Concede that openly — it is a real disagreement inside the tradition. What nobody disputes is the timing. The reports that permit this variation are early and are in the most reliable collections. So permitted variation was built in from the start; it was not bolted on later to cover a problem. That is the difference from copying differences in the Bible. Here the variation is authorised at the moment of revelation and passed on through named teachers, one to the next. There, the differences were never authorised by anyone and are only found by comparing one copy against another.
