The Prophet's Marriages

The claim being examined
People point to eleven marriages when the Qur'an allows four (Q 4:3), and read it as appetite rather than prophethood.
The Islamic position
Nine of the marriages were to widows or divorced women, most of them after he turned fifty, and nearly every one had a purpose: an alliance, care for a widow, or the passing on of knowledge. For twenty-five years before that — all through his youth — he was married to one woman, Khadijah (RA), who was fifteen years older than him.
Analysis
The limit of four in Q 4:3 is addressed to the community. Q 33:50 states an exception for the Prophet (SAW) himself, tied to his role. Look at what the marriages actually did. Some sealed peace with a tribe (Juwayriyya, Safiyya, Umm Habiba). Some gave a home to the widow of a man killed in battle (Umm Salama, Hafsa). And some carried knowledge forward: Aisha (RA) alone reports over two thousand narrations, many about washing, prayer and family life that only a wife could have known. Anyone who wants to explain the marriages as appetite still has to explain the twenty-five years of monogamy that came first.

فَٱنكِحُوا۟ مَا طَابَ لَكُم مِّنَ ٱلنِّسَآءِ مَثْنَىٰ وَثُلَـٰثَ وَرُبَـٰعَ ۖ
fa-inkiḥū mā ṭāba lakum mina l-nisāi mathnā wathulātha warubāʿa
Marry those that please you of women, two or three or four; but if you fear you will not be just, then one.
خَالِصَةًۭ لَّكَ مِن دُونِ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ ۗ
khāliṣatan laka min dūni l-mu'minīna
A privilege for you alone, apart from the believers.
