Deuteronomy 33:2 — Sinai, Seir and Paran
Handle with care. Handle with care. Christian commentators read this as poetic parallelism describing one theophany, not three prophets, and that reading is legitimate. Lead with geography, not the ten thousand.
In short
- 1.Sinai is in Egypt — Moses
- 2.Seir is the mountain land of Edom, in the region of Palestine — Jesus
- 3.Clarke's Commentary places Paran in Arabia Petraea; Strong's defines it as 'a desert of Arabia'
- 4.Irfan Shahid identified a Pharan in the Hijaz belonging to the Sulaym tribe
- 5.Sebeos, a seventh-century Armenian bishop, wrote that the Arabs 'came out from Paran'
- 6.'Ten thousands of saints' and 'a fiery law from his right hand' follow immediately
The claim being examined
Moses'' final blessing names three locations in sequence: the Lord came from Sinai, rose from Seir, and shone forth from Mount Paran.
The Islamic position
Read as a sequence of three revelations — Moses in Sinai, Jesus in Palestine, and a third figure in Arabia, where biblical geographers place Paran.
Analysis
The two halves of the argument have different strengths. The geography is well supported: Genesis places Ishmael in Paran, and standard reference works locate it in Arabia, with Shahid and Shehada narrowing it towards the Hijaz — though "somewhere in Arabia" is the safest claim, since biblical geographers differ on the precise site. The ten thousand is the more contested half: Muslims connect it to the ten thousand who entered Mecca in 630 CE, while Christian commentators read the verse as poetic parallelism about God's own theophany, and the Hebrew text of the phrase is textually difficult. Present the geography as your strong ground and the ten thousand as a suggestive addition, not a proof.
