What "secular" actually means
In short

The claim being examined
Modern Western societies describe themselves as secular: religion is a private opinion, and public life is run on reason and consent alone.
The Islamic position
Islam does not separate the sacred from the ordinary. Worship (ibadah) covers trade, marriage, speech and government, because the One who created a person is the One with the right to tell them how to live.
Analysis
The word secular comes from the Latin saeculum, "this age". The modern usage — public institutions functioning without reference to religious authority — hardened in Europe after the Wars of Religion (1618-1648) and was given philosophical form in the Enlightenment. Sociologists once assumed that as societies modernised they would inevitably lose religion; the "secularisation thesis" has since been heavily revised, with Peter L. Berger (a founder of the thesis) publicly abandoning it in the 1990s and Charles Taylor (A Secular Age, 2007) reframing the change as a shift in the conditions of belief rather than a simple loss of it. Taylor's point is useful in conversation: the modern West did not disprove God, it built a way of living in which God is one option among many and no longer the background assumption. Islam's claim is different in kind. is not one belief slotted into private life; it is the recognition that the Creator's authority extends to everything He created. The Qur'an frames prayer, sacrifice, living and dying as a single submitted whole (Q 6:162).

قُلْ إِنَّ صَلَاتِي وَنُسُكِي وَمَحْيَايَ وَمَمَاتِي لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ
Qul inna salati wa nusuki wa mahyaya wa mamati lillahi rabbi al-alamin
Say: my prayer, my rites of sacrifice, my living and my dying are for Allah, Lord of all the worlds.
وَمَا خَلَقْتُ الْجِنَّ وَالْإِنسَ إِلَّا لِيَعْبُدُونِ
Wa ma khalaqtu al-jinna wa al-insa illa li-ya'budun
I did not create jinn and mankind except to worship Me.
