The claim being examined

The West is not only less Christian in law; it is measurably less religious in practice, and the trend is generational.

The Islamic position

Islam expects a society to drift when the link with revelation weakens, and it names the return — turning back to God — as the remedy rather than nostalgia for a lost era.

Analysis

The Office for National Statistics reported that in the 2021 Census of England and Wales, 46.2 per cent of the population described themselves as Christian — below half for the first time since the question was introduced — while 37.2 per cent reported no religion and 6.5 per cent Muslim. The long-running British Social Attitudes survey (NatCen) has tracked the same movement across decades. In the United States, Pew Research Center's Religious Landscape studies document the growth of the religiously unaffiliated, concentrated among younger cohorts. Two cautions when using these figures. First, decline of Christian identification is not evidence for Islam; it only establishes that the historic moral framework of the West has lost its social base. Second, Muslim communities are not immune to the same forces, and the same Pew data shows retention challenges among younger Muslims in Europe. Present this honestly. The Qur'anic frame is not triumph over another community's decline; it is the sunnah of Allah with nations, that what a people carry inwardly determines what happens to them outwardly (Q 13:11).
