They Chose War Over a Chapter

Handle with care. Do not overstate this into 'no one has ever written good Arabic since'. The claim is about matching the Qur'an on its own terms, not about Arabic literature being poor.

The claim being examined

Behaviour is evidence. When a cheap refutation is available and a costly one is chosen instead, the cheap one was probably not available.

The Islamic position

The Quraysh had motive, means and time. Their response was boycott, persecution and warfare — never a literary answer.

Analysis

This is the historical hinge of al-Khattabi's case, and it is an argument from revealed preference rather than from aesthetics. He notes that the opponents were not passive: they organised, spent, bled and legislated against the movement. Every one of those responses was more expensive than composing a few lines of Arabic that their own poets could have produced in an afternoon — if a match were possible. The counter-move is available to a critic: perhaps they attempted and the attempts were not preserved. Al-Khattabi's reply is that the transmission culture preserved even the crudest satire aimed at the Prophet, and that a successful match would have been the most-repeated text in Arabia.

Qur'an 8:31

وَإِذَا تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِمْ ءَايَٰتُنَا قَالُوا۟ قَدْ سَمِعْنَا لَوْ نَشَآءُ لَقُلْنَا مِثْلَ هَٰذَآ

And when Our verses are recited to them, they say: we have heard; if we wished, we could say the like of this.

Qur'an 52:33-34

أَمْ يَقُولُونَ تَقَوَّلَهُۥ ۚ بَل لَّا يُؤْمِنُونَ فَلْيَأْتُوا۟ بِحَدِيثٍۢ مِّثْلِهِۦٓ

Or do they say he has fabricated it? Rather, they do not believe. Then let them bring a discourse like it, if they are truthful.
