They Chose War Over a Chapter

Handle with care. Do not overstate this into 'no one has ever written good Arabic since'. The claim is about matching the Qur'an on its own terms, not about Arabic literature being poor.

The claim being examined

Behaviour is evidence. When a cheap refutation is available and a costly one is chosen instead, the cheap one was probably not available.

The Islamic position

The Quraysh had motive, means and time. Their response was boycott, persecution and warfare — never a literary answer.

Analysis

This is the historical hinge of the case, and it is an argument from what people actually did rather than from taste. The opponents were not passive: they organised, spent, fought and boycotted. Every one of those was more expensive than composing a few lines of Arabic, which their own poets could have done in an afternoon — if a match were possible. A critic can answer that attempts were made and simply not preserved. Al-Khattabi's reply is that this was a culture that preserved even the crudest insult aimed at the Prophet (SAW), and a successful match would have been the most repeated text in Arabia.

From the Qur'an

وَإِذَا تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِمْ ءَايَـٰتُنَا قَالُوا۟ قَدْ سَمِعْنَا لَوْ نَشَآءُ لَقُلْنَا مِثْلَ هَـٰذَآ ۙ

wa-idhā tut'lā ʿalayhim āyātunā qālū qad samiʿ'nā law nashāu laqul'nā mith'la hādhā

And when Our verses are recited to them, they say: we have heard; if we wished, we could say the like of this.

أَمْ يَقُولُونَ تَقَوَّلَهُۥ ۚ بَل لَّا يُؤْمِنُونَ فَلْيَأْتُوا۟ بِحَدِيثٍۢ مِّثْلِهِۦٓ

am yaqūlūna taqawwalahu bal lā yu'minūna falyatū biḥadīthin mith'lihi

Or do they say he has fabricated it? Rather, they do not believe. Then let them bring a discourse like it, if they are truthful.
