Bala, Not Na'am (Q 7:172)
Handle with care. State this as the position of the classical grammarians, which it is. Do not present it as an uncontested modern linguistic finding.

The claim being examined
Arabic has two words for yes, and only one of them can affirm a negative question. Choosing wrongly reverses the meaning.
The Islamic position
In the primordial covenant, humanity answers bala — which affirms the questioner's proposition; na'am would have denied it.
Analysis
This is al-Khattabi's most quotable example and the one that survives explanation to a non-Arabist, because the logic maps onto a distinction English lacks but French (si) and German (doch) retain. In a negative interrogative, na'am assents to the proposition as framed, which here is the negation; bala rejects the negation and affirms the positive. The theological stakes make the choice non-trivial: the verse records humanity's acknowledgement of lordship, and the wrong particle would record its denial. Al-Khattabi's broader point is that particles, not just content words, do heavy semantic work, and that the Qur'an handles them with consistent exactness.

أَوَلَيْسَ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضَ بِقَٰدِرٍ عَلَىٰٓ أَن يَخْلُقَ مِثْلَهُم ۚ بَلَىٰ
Is not the One who created the heavens and the earth able to create the like of them? Bala — yes indeed.
