The fall of two empires

Handle with care. Give the grading honestly when you cite the Trench narration; do not upgrade a hasan report to sahih.

In short

The claim being examined

While under siege and materially weak, the Prophet told his companions they would take the treasures of Persia and Byzantium.

The Islamic position

Within a generation both empires had fallen to a people who had no army worth the name when the words were spoken.

Analysis

The report is preserved in Musnad Ahmad and an-Nasa'i, with the Khaybar and Yemen material in Bukhari. Historians of late antiquity (Hoyland, Donner) treat the speed of the conquests as one of the genuinely surprising events of the period. The evidential claim here is modest and should stay modest: the prediction is well attested and the outcome is uncontested history; the sceptic's reply is that a confident leader might say such a thing anyway. Acknowledge that and move to the dated prophecy.
