Produce One Surah Like It

Handle with care. Do not claim the challenge has never been attempted. It has — by Musaylimah in the Prophet's lifetime and by later writers. The claim is that no attempt has been judged to have met it, including by native critics of Islam.

In short

The claim being examined

The Qur'an stakes its own claim on a falsifiable test: if it is human speech, produce speech of its kind. The challenge is public, repeated, and never withdrawn.

The Islamic position

The Qur'an narrows the challenge in stages — a Qur'an like it, ten surahs, then a single surah — and states in advance that it will not be met.

Analysis

Al-Khattabi treats the challenge (tahaddi) as the load-bearing element of the argument, not the rhetoric surrounding it. Its force comes from three features together. It is public, addressed to people whose highest cultural achievement was language itself. It is minimal — one surah, and the shortest surahs run to a few lines. And it is stated with a prediction of failure attached, which is a risky move for a text circulating among hostile experts for over two decades. The literary claim is therefore historical as well as aesthetic: it can be assessed by what the challenged parties did.

From the Qur'an

Qur'an 2:23-24

And if you are in doubt about what We have sent down upon Our Servant, then produce a surah the like of it, and call your witnesses besides God, if you are truthful. But if you do not — and you will never do so — then fear the Fire.

Qur'an 17:88

Say: if mankind and the jinn gathered to produce the like of this Qur'an, they could not produce the like of it, even if they supported one another.

Qur'an 11:13

Then bring ten surahs like it, invented, and call upon whomever you can besides God, if you are truthful.

Qur'an 10:38

Then produce a surah like it, and call upon whomever you can besides God, if you are truthful.
