One Register Across Law, Story and Judgement
Handle with care. Unity of register is a literary judgement, not a measurement. Present it as an observation to test, not as a demonstrated fact.
In short
- 1.Surah al-Nisa moves from inheritance shares to warfare to theology without a change of voice.
- 2.Surah Yusuf carries a full narrative arc in the same register as the legal passages.
- 3.This is unusual: legal codes and epics are ordinarily written by different hands in different styles.
- 4.Al-Khattabi treats the unity of register as part of what nazm means at the level of the whole.
The claim being examined
Most books change register when they change subject. Legal writing, narrative and lament normally read as different kinds of prose.
The Islamic position
The Qur'an moves between inheritance law, prophetic narrative, eschatology and prayer without leaving its register.
Analysis
The unity-of-register observation is a whole-text feature and is therefore useful against the charge that i'jaz claims rest on cherry-picked verses. Composed orally over twenty-three years, in response to unpredictable events, and covering material that in other traditions is distributed across law codes, chronicles, liturgies and wisdom literature, the Qur'an nonetheless does not read as an anthology of genres. Al-Khattabi links this to his central thesis: if the arrangement were merely local polish, it would fracture at the joints between subject matters. A critic can test this claim by reading a legal passage and a narrative passage side by side and judging whether the voice shifts.
From the Qur'an
Qur'an 4:11
يُوصِيكُمُ ٱللَّهُ فِىٓ أَوْلَٰدِكُمْ ۖ لِلذَّكَرِ مِثْلُ حَظِّ ٱلْأُنثَيَيْنِ
God instructs you concerning your children: for the male, what is equal to the share of two females.
Qur'an 12:4
إِذْ قَالَ يُوسُفُ لِأَبِيهِ يَٰٓأَبَتِ إِنِّى رَأَيْتُ أَحَدَ عَشَرَ كَوْكَبًۭا
When Joseph said to his father: O my father, I saw eleven stars and the sun and the moon; I saw them prostrating to me.
