Know When to Use This Argument

Handle with care. Wisdom in dawah includes not using your best argument on the wrong person. An argument the listener cannot assess can leave them feeling handled.

In short

1.Arabic speaker: lead with it, go into detail, expect and welcome pushback.
2.Non-Arabic speaker: mention it briefly, be honest about the limitation, move to reasoning-based arguments.
3.Never let it become the whole conversation with someone who cannot check it.
4.In GORAP terms this belongs at R — Revelation — after the need for guidance is established.

The claim being examined

An argument that depends on a language the listener does not read is a supporting argument, not an opening one.

The Islamic position

With an Arabic speaker this is among the strongest evidences available. With everyone else it is context, and should be introduced as such.

Analysis

Argument selection is a skill distinct from argument knowledge, and this section is the clearest case. The literary argument has an unusual property: its persuasive force scales directly with the listener's competence in Arabic, from decisive to nearly inaccessible. Presenting it as a knockdown proof to someone with no Arabic asks them to take a specialist's word on a specialist's question, which is a weak position to place them in and an uncomfortable one to defend. The better move is to state the argument's shape, state its precondition honestly, and offer it as a reason to look further — while carrying the weight of the conversation on arguments the listener can evaluate directly.

Qur'an 16:125

ٱدْعُ إِلَىٰ سَبِيلِ رَبِّكَ بِٱلْحِكْمَةِ وَٱلْمَوْعِظَةِ ٱلْحَسَنَةِ

Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction, and argue with them in a way that is best.

Qur'an 41:44

وَلَوْ جَعَلْنَٰهُ قُرْءَانًا أَعْجَمِيًّۭا لَّقَالُوا۟ لَوْلَا فُصِّلَتْ ءَايَٰتُهُۥٓ ۖ ءَا۬عْجَمِىٌّۭ وَعَرَبِىٌّۭ

Had We made it a non-Arabic Qur'an, they would have said: why are its verses not made clear? A non-Arabic Qur'an and an Arab messenger?
