Arabic Has Almost No True Synonyms

The claim being examined

If two words meant exactly the same thing, choosing between them would be arbitrary and the claim of perfect diction would collapse. Classical Arabic theory denies that they do.

The Islamic position

Apparent synonyms are plesionyms: they overlap in translation and differ in nuance, scope or grammatical behaviour.

Analysis

This principle is the engine of the diction half of al-Khattabi's case, and it is the part a non-specialist can begin to verify with reference works. The claim is not that Arabic is magical, but that its lexicographic tradition preserved fine distinctions which survive in the classical dictionaries, and that the Qur'an consistently takes the word whose distinctive sense fits the context. The argument is falsifiable in a useful way: a critic can propose a verse where a different word would have served as well or better, and the discussion proceeds on evidence. Modern semantics would call these near-synonyms or plesionyms and would agree that exact synonymy is rare in natural language.
