Al-Walid ibn al-Mughirah's Verdict

The claim being examined

The Quraysh sent their finest literary judge to produce a dismissal of the Qur'an ahead of the pilgrimage season. His reported verdict was the opposite of what was commissioned.

The Islamic position

A hostile expert, tasked with categorising the Qur'an as poetry, magic or madness, conceded its quality before recommending the label of magic.

Analysis

This episode is preserved in the sirah and the exegetical literature and is usually paired with Surah al-Muddaththir 74:11-25, which reports the deliberation of a man weighing what to say. Its evidential value is limited and should be stated as such: it comes from Muslim sources, and it is a report about a private deliberation. What it does show is how the earliest tradition itself understood the opposition — not as a dispute over literary quality, but over the source of a quality the opponents did not deny. The choice of 'magic' is telling in the same way that Q 8:31's boast is telling: it concedes an effect that requires explanation while refusing the explanation offered.

Qur'an 74:24-25

فَقَالَ إِنْ هَٰذَآ إِلَّا سِحْرٌۭ يُؤْثَرُ إِنْ هَٰذَآ إِلَّا قَوْلُ ٱلْبَشَرِ

Then he said: this is nothing but magic handed down; this is nothing but the word of a human being.

Qur'an 74:18-20

إِنَّهُۥ فَكَّرَ وَقَدَّرَ فَقُتِلَ كَيْفَ قَدَّرَ ثُمَّ قُتِلَ كَيْفَ قَدَّرَ

Indeed he thought and deliberated. So may he be destroyed — how he deliberated. Then may he be destroyed — how he deliberated.
