The Qur'an as the Criterion · Using This Without Overreaching
Quote their Bible, in their translation
In short
- 1.Use the translation they use — ESV, NIV, KJV — not one they distrust.
- 2.Give book, chapter and verse so they can check you.
- 3.Read a verse before and after so you cannot be accused of clipping.
The claim being examined
A passage read from your phone in your words sounds like an accusation; the same passage read from their own copy sounds like a discovery.
The Islamic position
Give them the reference, let them open it themselves, and read the surrounding verses so nothing is taken out of context.
Analysis
Three practical rules make the difference between an argument that is heard and one that is dismissed. First, translation. If you quote a rendering they do not use, the conversation becomes about the translation. Ask which Bible they read and use it; the app's reference links open the passage in a mainstream English version. Second, context. Read the verse before and the verse after. If a passage genuinely does not say what you thought once the surrounding lines are read, say so — that single act of honesty is worth more than the passage would have been. Third, let them read it. Handing over the phone or asking them to open their own app changes the dynamic completely, because they are now examining their text rather than defending it against yours. Alongside these sits the Qur'anic instruction for this exact conversation: "And do not argue with the People of the Book except in a way that is best" (Q 29:46), and the wider rule of Q 16:125 — wisdom, good instruction, and arguing in the best manner. These are not softeners on the argument; in the Qur'an's framing they are conditions of it.
From the Qur'an
وَلَا تُجَادِلُوا أَهْلَ الْكِتَابِ إِلَّا بِالَّتِي هِيَ أَحْسَنُ
And do not argue with the People of the Book except in a way that is best.
ادْعُ إِلَىٰ سَبِيلِ رَبِّكَ بِالْحِكْمَةِ وَالْمَوْعِظَةِ الْحَسَنَةِ
Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction.
