Who Stood at the Cross?
Handle with care. Distance does not by itself prove misidentification. Present it as one link in a chain, not as proof on its own.

The claim being examined
The presence of Jesus' mother and the beloved disciple at the foot of the cross is one of the most depicted scenes in Christian art. The Synoptics place every one of his followers at a distance.
The Islamic position
The Islamic account holds that the crucifixion scene itself was obscured to those present (Q 4:157). The Gospel witnesses cannot even establish who was close enough to see.
Analysis
Mark places the women looking on from a distance and mentions no mother of Jesus among them. John moves the mother and the beloved disciple to the foot of the cross and gives them a dialogue with the dying Jesus. Scholars generally read the Johannine scene as a theological composition establishing the beloved disciple's authority, not as a recovered eyewitness memory. On the Islamic reading this matters directly: if the closest witnesses were at a distance, the identification of the crucified man rests on distant observation.
