The Two Genealogies of Jesus
Handle with care. Expect the Mary's-line answer immediately. Respond that Luke names Joseph (PBUH) in every manuscript, and that the reading is a later proposal — do not claim Christians invented it dishonestly.

The claim being examined
Matthew and Luke each trace Jesus (PBUH)' descent through Joseph (PBUH). From David (PBUH) onwards the two lists share almost no names, and they even disagree on Joseph's (PBUH) father.
The Islamic position
Islam locates Jesus (PBUH)' honour in his miraculous birth and his prophethood, not in a legal pedigree — a pedigree the Gospels themselves cannot fix.
Analysis
From David (PBUH) down to Joseph (PBUH) the two lists barely overlap, and Matthew's own count of the generations does not add up the way he says it does. Matthew and Luke are two of the Gospels (Matthew, Mark and Luke — the three that tell the story in closely overlapping ways), which makes the gap here harder to explain, not easier. The usual explanation is that Luke is giving Mary's family — but Luke's text says Joseph (PBUH), and no manuscript says otherwise. The other explanation appeals to a Jewish custom of marrying a dead brother's widow, which would need to have happened generation after generation. Both are attempts to rescue the text rather than to read it. And both writers trace the line through a man they also say was not the biological father.
