Numbers That Do Not Match: Samuel and Chronicles
Handle with care. Most study Bibles footnote the Ahaziah discrepancy as a scribal error. Say so — conceding it strengthens your credibility and the argument still stands as a transmission point.
In short
- 1.2 Samuel 24:1: the LORD incites David. 1 Chronicles 21:1: Satan incites David
- 2.800,000 versus 1,100,000 fighting men in the same census
- 3.Ahaziah is 22 in Kings and 42 in Chronicles — his father was 40 when he died
The claim being examined
The same events are narrated twice in the Hebrew Bible, and the numbers, and in one case the identity of the tempter, do not agree.
The Islamic position
The Qur'an describes previous scriptures as having been altered in transmission and wording (Q 2:79, Q 5:13). Parallel narratives that disagree with one another are the visible trace of that process.
Analysis
Chronicles rewrites Samuel and Kings from a later theological standpoint, and the differences are systematic rather than random: the agent of temptation changes from God to Satan, and numbers are frequently inflated. The Ahaziah figure is the clearest case, because at 42 he would have been two years older than his own father. Most modern translations quietly follow the Kings reading and footnote the difference, which is itself an admission that the received Hebrew text carries an error. This is not a claim about a hostile forger; it is the ordinary result of centuries of hand copying and editorial reshaping.
