The Ebionites: the branch that lost
Handle with care. Ebionite beliefs are known only from hostile sources and varied between groups. Do not overstate what we can know.
In short
- 1.**They held Jesus to be fully human**, the son of Mary and Joseph, chosen by God.
- 2.**They kept the Torah** — Sabbath, circumcision, dietary law.
- 3.**They rejected Paul entirely** as one who abandoned the Law.
- 4.**Everything we know comes from their enemies:** Irenaeus, Origen, Epiphanius. Their own writings did not survive.
The claim being examined
A Jewish-Christian community persisted for centuries holding that Jesus was the human messiah, that the Torah remained binding, and that Paul was an apostate.
The Islamic position
Their beliefs — one God, Jesus as a human prophet-messiah, obedience to divine law — are close to the Islamic position, and they were the descendants of the Jerusalem church.
Analysis
Irenaeus, Against Heresies 1.26, describes the Ebionites as using only Matthew, keeping the Law, and repudiating Paul as an apostate from the Law. Origen and Epiphanius add further detail, all of it hostile. Ehrman devotes a chapter of Lost Christianities to them, and stresses the methodological problem: we possess no Ebionite text, only the polemics written to refute them. That silence is itself part of the story of how orthodoxy was established. Tabor sees them as the surviving remnant of the Jerusalem community that fled before the destruction of the Temple. For a Muslim the significance is clear: a community with a direct line back to James held a Christology recognisably close to the Qur''an''s, and it was written out of the faith.
