Substitutionary atonement contradicts the Hebrew Bible

Analysis
The Torah does permit sacrifice, and honest argument must say so. What it forbids is the transfer of moral guilt from one person to another: Deuteronomy 24:16 and Ezekiel 18 legislate and preach against exactly that. Ezekiel 18 goes further and describes a wicked man who turns from his sins living, and a righteous man who turns to wickedness dying — repentance and its opposite, with no mediator in view. Sacrifice in Leviticus is bounded, ritual and animal; human sacrifice is condemned outright (Deuteronomy 12:31, Jeremiah 19:5). Paul universalises a human death into a cosmic payment for the sins of all humanity. Tabor identifies this as Paul''s most original contribution and the one with the least Jewish precedent.
