Paul never met the earthly Jesus
Handle with care. Avoid armchair medical diagnoses of Paul. It looks disrespectful and it is not scholarship.
In short
- 1.**Paul says it himself.** I did not receive it from any man, nor was I taught it, but by revelation (Galatians 1:12).
- 2.**No isnad.** There is no chain of transmission from the living Jesus to Paul — the link is a vision on a road.
- 3.**Acts contradicts itself** on what the companions experienced: they heard the voice but saw no one (Acts 9:7) against they saw the light but did not hear the voice (Acts 22:9).
- 4.**Paul rarely quotes Jesus.** His letters, the earliest Christian writings we possess, almost never cite the teachings of the man he claims to represent.
The claim being examined
Paul''s entire apostolic authority rests on a private visionary experience rather than on companionship with the historical Jesus.
The Islamic position
Islam preserves religion through an unbroken chain of named transmitters. A doctrine founded on one man''s unwitnessed inner experience has no chain at all.
Analysis
Tabor notes that Paul''s letters predate all four Gospels by roughly two decades, so the earliest Christian theology in existence comes from someone with no access to the historical Jesus. Where Paul does appeal to tradition, as in 1 Corinthians 11:23, he frames even that as something received from the Lord. Ali Ataie contrasts this with the Islamic science of isnad, where a report is graded on the named, verified chain of people who carried it. On that standard Paul''s gospel would be classed as an unsupported personal claim. The point is not that visions are impossible; it is that a religion cannot be verified by an experience only one person had.
