Why the Qur'an has the true insight into the crucifixion
In short
- 1.The Qur'an does not deny that a crucifixion was witnessed — it denies that Jesus was the one killed [4:157].
- 2.**shubbiha lahum** — 'it was made to appear so to them' — locates the error in perception, not in the reports.
- 3.God then raised Jesus to Himself [4:158]; he was neither killed nor died on a cross.
- 4.The Qur'an presents itself as knowledge of the unseen [3:44, 11:49], not as a competing eyewitness account.

The claim being examined
Q 4:157 is dismissed as a seventh-century denial of a well-attested first-century event.
The Islamic position
Islam holds that the Qur'an, as revelation from the One who was present, reveals what observation could not: it was made to appear so to them.
Analysis
The Islamic claim operates at a different level from the historical one, and it is honest to say so. From an observational standpoint, an event that was made to appear as a crucifixion and an actual crucifixion would generate identical reports; the historian working from those reports cannot distinguish them. The Muslim argument is therefore not that the sources are lying but that they are limited, and that revelation supplies what the sources cannot: the identity of the man on the cross.

وَمَا قَتَلُوهُ يَقِينًا بَل رَّفَعَهُ اللَّهُ إِلَيْهِ
They certainly did not kill him. Rather, God raised him to Himself.
Qur'an 3:55
إِنِّي مُتَوَفِّيكَ وَرَافِعُكَ إِلَيَّ وَمُطَهِّرُكَ مِنَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا
O Jesus, I will take you and raise you to Myself and purify you from those who disbelieve.
Qur'an 11:49
تِلْكَ مِنْ أَنبَاءِ الْغَيْبِ نُوحِيهَا إِلَيْكَ
That is from the news of the unseen which We reveal to you.
