Reconciling the Trinity with reason
In short
- 1.There is a difference between what is beyond reason (the how of God's attributes) and what is against reason (a thing being one and three in the same respect).
- 2.Analogies used to explain it — water/ice/steam, the three-leaf clover, the sun and its light — each map onto a formally condemned heresy (modalism, tritheism, Arianism).
- 3.If no analogy survives, the doctrine cannot be illustrated, only asserted.

The claim being examined
Christians often answer objections to the by classifying it as a mystery beyond human reason rather than a contradiction.
The Islamic position
Islam holds that God may transcend reason but does not contradict it: revelation can be above comprehension without being incoherent.
Analysis
Appealing to mystery is not wrong in itself — every admits that creatures cannot grasp everything about the Creator. The difficulty here is that the is not only left unexplained: every familiar illustration of it (water in three states, a man who is father, son and husband) is judged a heresy by the very tradition that offers it. That suggests the problem is in the formula, not in the listener. (God's absolute oneness) puts the mystery where Islam says it belongs — in the reality of God Himself, not in the arithmetic of counting Him.

لَيْسَ كَمِثْلِهِۦ شَىْءٌۭ ۖ وَهُوَ ٱلسَّمِيعُ ٱلْبَصِيرُ
laysa kamith'lihi shayon wahuwa l-samīʿu l-baṣīru
There is nothing like unto Him, and He is the Hearing, the Seeing.
لَوْ كَانَ فِيهِمَآ ءَالِهَةٌ إِلَّا ٱللَّهُ لَفَسَدَتَا ۚ فَسُبْحَـٰنَ ٱللَّهِ رَبِّ ٱلْعَرْشِ عَمَّا يَصِفُونَ
law kāna fīhimā ālihatun illā l-lahu lafasadatā fasub'ḥāna l-lahi rabbi l-ʿarshi ʿammā yaṣifūna
Had there been within them gods besides God, they both would have been ruined.
