The Verse of the Sword (Q 9:5)

The claim being examined
Q 9:5 is quoted as a standing command to kill non-Muslims wherever they are found, said to abrogate every peaceful verse.
The Islamic position
Q 9:5 addresses specific Meccan polytherists who had violated a treaty during an active war, and the verse's own continuation commands protection and safe passage for any of them who seek it.
Analysis
Reading verse 5 without verses 4, 6 and 7 is the entire mechanism of the objection. Verse 6 instructs the Muslims to grant asylum to a polytheist who requests it, escort him to safety, and let him go — an incoherent instruction inside a command of extermination. The abrogation claim traces to a few late exegetes and was never a majority usul position; al-Tabari and the mainstream treat Surah 9 as war legislation for a specific conflict. Note also that Q 9:29's jizya provision presupposes the continued existence of non-Muslim communities.

If any polytheist seeks your protection, grant it, so he may hear the word of Allah, then escort him to safety.
