Answering Objections to Islam · Positive Evidences
The Preservation of the Prophetic Biography and Isnad
In short
- 1.Ibn Hajar's Tahdhib al-Tahdhib alone assesses over 12,000 named transmitters.
- 2.The tradition openly classifies reports as sahih, hasan, da'if and mawdu' — including labelling its own material forged.
- 3.Harald Motzki's isnad-cum-matn analysis dates significant material to the first century.
The claim being examined
Critics argue the hadith corpus was fabricated wholesale in the second and third centuries.
The Islamic position
Islam produced the only pre-modern civilisation with a formal science of source criticism — isnad analysis and 'ilm al-rijal — which catalogued hundreds of thousands of transmitters by name, reliability, dates and teachers, precisely to detect fabrication.
Analysis
Joseph Schacht's blanket skepticism has been substantially revised by later work: Motzki, Gregor Schoeler and Behnam Sadeghi's isnad-cum-matn method shows that correlations between chain branching and textual variation are best explained by genuine early common sources rather than late invention. A discipline that identifies and publishes its own forgeries is behaving as a critical enterprise, not a propagandistic one. Concede that fabrication happened on a large scale — the tradition says so itself — and that the scholarly response to it is the point.
