Salvation Without a Mediator

The claim being examined
Islam's soteriology is presented as works-righteousness with no assurance, against the Christian offer of grace.
The Islamic position
Islam holds that repentance is direct: no intermediary, no sacrifice, no priesthood. God's mercy is stated as encompassing all things, and the Qur'an forbids despair of it categorically.
Analysis
The theological divergence concerns whether justice requires a substitutionary penalty. The Qur'anic position is that God forgives by sovereign will, and that requiring a payment for forgiveness limits the very mercy it aims to demonstrate. The biblical tradition contains substantial material on the same side: Ezekiel 18:20 explicitly denies that the son bears the father's guilt, and Hosea 6:6 places mercy above sacrifice. Islam retains intercession (shafa'a) as something God grants, not something that purchases forgiveness from Him.
