Salvation Without a Mediator

The claim being examined
People say Islam makes you earn your way to heaven with no assurance, while Christianity offers grace as a free gift.
The Islamic position
Islam holds that repentance is direct: no intermediary, no sacrifice, no priesthood. God's mercy is stated as encompassing all things, and the Qur'an forbids despair of it categorically.
Analysis
The real disagreement is one question: does justice require someone to be punished before God can forgive? The Qur'an says God forgives because He chooses to. Requiring a payment first actually limits the mercy it is meant to display — a debt settled is not a debt forgiven. The Bible has plenty on the same side. Ezekiel 18:20 says plainly that a son does not carry his father's guilt. Hosea 6:6 puts mercy above sacrifice. These are good verses to raise gently. Islam does keep intercession — but as something God permits on the Day of Judgement, not something that buys forgiveness out of Him.

لَا تَقْنَطُوا۟ مِن رَّحْمَةِ ٱللَّهِ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَغْفِرُ ٱلذُّنُوبَ جَمِيعًا ۚ
lā taqnaṭū min raḥmati l-lahi inna l-laha yaghfiru l-dhunūba jamīʿan
Do not despair of the mercy of Allah; indeed Allah forgives all sins.
وَلَا تَزِرُ وَازِرَةٌۭ وِزْرَ أُخْرَىٰ ۚ
walā taziru wāziratun wiz'ra ukh'rā
No bearer of burdens shall bear the burden of another.
