Making marriage affordable

The claim being examined
Weddings have become extremely expensive, and housing costs have pushed the age of first marriage steadily upward.
The Islamic position
The Prophetic practice is the opposite: the best marriage is the easiest, dowries were modest, and the community is instructed to help people marry.
Analysis
The Office for National Statistics records the mean age at first marriage in England and Wales rising well into the thirties for both sexes, and commercial surveys (Hitched, Bridebook) put average UK wedding spending in the tens of thousands of pounds — treat those industry surveys as indicative rather than official. Set beside this, the Prophetic material is startling in its simplicity. A man who had nothing was married to a woman on the basis of what he had memorised of the Qur'an, after the Prophet, peace be upon him, told him to seek even an iron ring (Sahih al-Bukhari 5087, 5121 and related narrations). The Prophet, peace be upon him, is also reported to have said that the marriage with the greatest blessing is the one with the least burden (Musnad Ahmad 24529 — graded variously, so attribute it carefully or lean on the Bukhari material instead). The well-known incident of Umar ibn al-Khattab attempting to cap dowries and withdrawing when a woman cited Q 4:20, reported in Sunan al-Bayhaqi and in tafsir literature, has a contested chain; it is often cited but should be introduced as a report, not as a proof. The practical Islamic instruments are real: mahr set by the woman at whatever she chooses, no obligation of an expensive walimah, and the community's duty under Q 24:32.

وَأَنكِحُوا الْأَيَامَىٰ مِنكُمْ
Marry off the single among you.
وَآتَيْتُمْ إِحْدَاهُنَّ قِنطَارًا فَلَا تَأْخُذُوا مِنْهُ شَيْئًا
If you have given one of them a great amount, do not take back anything from it.
From the Sunnah
The Prophet, peace be upon him, said to the man: look for something, even an iron ring. He found nothing, so he married him to her for what he had memorised of the Qur'an.
