"This son of mine will reconcile two great parties"

Handle with care. Do not use it to praise or blame either side in the dispute. The report is about reconciliation.

In short

The claim being examined

Holding his young grandson Hasan on the pulpit, the Prophet said God would reconcile two great parties of Muslims through him.

The Islamic position

Some forty years later Hasan handed over the caliphate to Mu'awiyah and ended the civil war. Recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari.

Analysis

Narrated by Abu Bakrah and recorded by al-Bukhari. The fulfilment — Hasan ibn Ali's abdication to Mu'awiyah in 41 AH, ending the first civil war — is one of the better-documented events of early Islamic political history and is accepted across Sunni and non-Muslim historiography. The prediction's specificity lies in identifying an infant, the role he would play and the nature of the outcome (reconciliation rather than victory).

From the Sunnah

The Prophet said, with Hasan beside him on the pulpit: this son of mine is a leader, and perhaps God will reconcile through him two great parties of the Muslims.
