“There is so much evil and suffering — how can God exist?”

Handle with care. Never use the doctor-and-needle analogy on someone describing a real bereavement or trauma. Listen first; the argument can wait.

In short

1.**Notice the shift.** This is a question about God's purposes, not about His existence.
2.**Perception is limited.** A man jabbing a baby with a needle looks evil — until you learn he is a doctor giving a vaccine.
3.**This life is a test,** and hardship is often what turns a person back to God.
4.**On atheism the problem is worse:** without God, suffering is not even wrong, it just is.

The claim being examined

Suffering is offered as evidence against a good and powerful God.

The Islamic position

The argument does not address whether God exists; it asks why God permits suffering. And human perception of harm is not a reliable measure of actual harm.

Analysis

The logical problem of evil — that God and suffering are strictly incompatible — is now widely regarded as unsuccessful even in secular philosophy of religion; what remains is the evidential version, which is a probability judgement about whether the suffering we see is gratuitous. That judgement requires knowing there is no sufficient reason, which is exactly what a limited observer cannot establish. Treat the emotional weight of this objection seriously: for many people it is not an argument but a grief.

الَّذِي خَلَقَ الْمَوْتَ وَالْحَيَاةَ لِيَبْلُوَكُمْ أَيُّكُمْ أَحْسَنُ عَمَلًا

He who created death and life to test you as to which of you is best in deed.

Qur'an 2:155

وَلَنَبْلُوَنَّكُم بِشَيْءٍ مِّنَ الْخَوْفِ وَالْجُوعِ وَنَقْصٍ مِّنَ الْأَمْوَالِ وَالْأَنفُسِ وَالثَّمَرَاتِ ۗ وَبَشِّرِ الصَّابِرِينَ

And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient.
