GORAP — The Basic Dawah Conversation · Common Contentions
“Doesn't evolution disprove God?”
Handle with care. Do not be dragged into defending or attacking evolutionary biology on the street. It is not the topic and it is not your strongest ground.
In short
- 1.**Different question entirely.** We are discussing the origin of the universe, not the diversity of species.
- 2.**Evolution presupposes** a universe, a planet, chemistry and the first living cell.
- 3.**Do not take the bait.** Debating biology here loses the thread and the conversation.
- 4.**Return to G:** how did the universe come into existence?
The claim being examined
Evolution is offered as a naturalistic replacement for the need for a creator.
The Islamic position
Whatever its merits, evolution addresses the development of life on a planet that already exists — it says nothing about how the universe came into being.
Analysis
This is a category distinction, not a refutation of biology, and stating it that way keeps you honest and keeps the conversation on track. Cosmological origins and biological development are separate explanatory domains; a mechanism for change within life cannot account for the existence of the physical order the mechanism operates inside.
From the Qur'an
Qur'an 71:14
وَقَدْ خَلَقَكُمْ أَطْوَارًا
While He has created you in stages.
