The flood — and what the Qur'an does not say
Handle with care. Handle with care: do not assert the flood was definitely local. Present it as a genuine difference among Muslim scholars.

The claim being examined
Genesis has a global flood covering the highest mountains, destroying all life on earth outside the ark.
The Islamic position
The Qur'an describes the destruction of Noah's people who rejected him, and does not make the global claims that Genesis makes.
Analysis
Genesis 7:19-23 is explicit: the waters covered all the high mountains under the whole heaven to a depth of fifteen cubits, and every living thing on the face of the ground was blotted out. That maximal claim carries a heavy scientific burden — global sedimentary geology, the distribution of species across continents, and human genetic diversity all sit awkwardly against a total bottleneck of eight people. The Qur'an narrates the same prophet and the same deliverance without the same claims. Its language is about Noah's people: "So We saved him and those with him in the laden ship. Then We drowned thereafter the remaining ones" (Q 26:119-120); "and We made them a sign for the people" (Q 25:37). Q 71 records the long preaching and the rejection. Muslim scholars have genuinely differed on the extent: many classical exegetes held it universal, while a number of later and modern scholars have argued for a flood covering the people to whom Noah was sent, and the Qur'anic wording accommodates that reading. Present the difference honestly, and note the general Qur'anic principle that God does not punish a people until a messenger has been sent to them (Q 17:15). The dawah point is modest and worth making plainly: the Qur'an does not commit itself to the detail that carries the scientific cost.
