Analysis
Exodus 12:37 gives about 600,000 men on foot besides children, and the census in Numbers 1:46 counts 603,550 men over twenty, excluding Levites — which implies a total population commonly estimated at two to three million. The practical objections are old and are raised by biblical scholars themselves, not only by Muslims: a group that size marching would form an enormous column; it would need water and food on a scale the Sinai cannot supply; and despite extensive survey work in the Sinai, no archaeological trace of an encampment on anything like that scale has been identified. Some scholars propose that the Hebrew word eleph, translated thousand, may mean a clan or military unit, which would reduce the figure dramatically — worth mentioning, because it shows the number is a live problem inside biblical studies. The Qur'an has Pharaoh describe the Israelites as "a small band" (Q 26:54) while rousing his cities, and 26:53-56 makes clear he considers them a manageable nuisance rather than a nation of millions. Be precise about the strength of this argument: it is coherence and plausibility, not excavation. There is no artefact establishing the Qur'anic figure; the point is that one account raises a problem that scholars have to solve, and the other does not.
