The transmission of the Qur'an: memorisation first
Handle with care. Do not claim there is 'not a single variant' in the Qur'an's history. The qira'at exist, the ahruf are documented in Bukhari, and Muslims have never hidden this. Claim what is true and defensible: one consonantal archetype, mass transmission, no doctrinal divergence.

- 2.It was written down contemporaneously by appointed scribes and collected under Abu Bakr, then standardised under **Uthman** [Bukhari 4987].
- 3.Its rhyming, rhythmic structure was designed for retention: 'We have made the Qur'an easy to remember' [54:17].
- 4.Millions of **huffaz** memorise it today; a mass-transmitted (**mutawatir**) text cannot be quietly altered.
- 5.Recitation is a public, daily, communal act — corruption would have to occur simultaneously in thousands of memories.
The claim being examined
Critics respond that the Qur'an is a text like any other and faces the same transmission problems.
The Islamic position
Islam holds that the Qur'an's primary carrier was never the page but the memory of a mass community, with the written text serving as a check on it.
Analysis
The relevant contrast is between a text preserved by copying and a text preserved by simultaneous mass memorisation with written verification. The Uthmanic standardisation was not a suppression of the text but the fixing of a single consonantal skeleton, and modern manuscript study — notably Marijn van Putten's work on the Uthmanic archetype and the Sana'a palimpsest studies of Sadeghi and Bergmann — supports the conclusion that the extant Qur'anic manuscript tradition descends from a single early written archetype.

Qur'an 54:17
وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا الْقُرْآنَ لِلذِّكْرِ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍ
And We have certainly made the Qur'an easy for remembrance, so is there any who will remember?
Qur'an 75:17
إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا جَمْعَهُ وَقُرْآنَهُ
Indeed, upon Us is its collection and its recitation.

Uthman ordered Zayd ibn Thabit and others to write out copies of the Qur'an, saying: If you differ with Zayd on anything of the Qur'an, write it in the dialect of Quraysh, for it was revealed in their tongue.

Gabriel used to review the Qur'an with the Prophet once every year, and he reviewed it twice in the year of his death.
