No blood, no forgiveness: the theology of the cross
In short

The claim being examined
Christian teaches that sin is a debt requiring payment, and that God's forgiveness is contingent on the shedding of blood — supremely, the death of Christ.
The Islamic position
Islam teaches that God forgives directly out of mercy, needing no payment, no substitute and no blood.
Analysis
Penal substitution (the belief that Jesus (PBUH) took the punishment owed for human sin) depends on a picture of God whose justice ties His own hands. The Islamic response presses on whether that picture holds together: an all-powerful God who cannot forgive until a death is extracted is bound by something outside His own will. Islam locates the problem not in God's justice but in the machinery built around it — machinery that owes far more to Roman legal thinking and to Anselm's medieval satisfaction theory than to anything Jesus (PBUH) taught.

۞ قُلْ يَـٰعِبَادِىَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَسْرَفُوا۟ عَلَىٰٓ أَنفُسِهِمْ لَا تَقْنَطُوا۟ مِن رَّحْمَةِ ٱللَّهِ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَغْفِرُ ٱلذُّنُوبَ جَمِيعًا ۚ إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلْغَفُورُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ
qul yāʿibādiya alladhīna asrafū ʿalā anfusihim lā taqnaṭū min raḥmati l-lahi inna l-laha yaghfiru l-dhunūba jamīʿan innahu huwa l-ghafūru l-raḥīmu
Say: O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of God's mercy. Indeed God forgives all sins.
وَمَن يَعْمَلْ سُوٓءًا أَوْ يَظْلِمْ نَفْسَهُۥ ثُمَّ يَسْتَغْفِرِ ٱللَّهَ يَجِدِ ٱللَّهَ غَفُورًۭا رَّحِيمًۭا
waman yaʿmal sūan aw yaẓlim nafsahu thumma yastaghfiri l-laha yajidi l-laha ghafūran raḥīman
Whoever does a wrong or wrongs himself then seeks God's forgiveness will find God Forgiving and Merciful.
