The stages of prohibition: how change actually happens

The claim being examined
People assume religious rules are imposed all at once and expect immediate perfection.
The Islamic position
The Qur'an removed a deeply embedded habit in stages over years, which is a model for how a person or a community changes.
Analysis
This is a card about method and is useful far beyond alcohol. The classical tradition records the sequence: Q 2:219 acknowledges some benefit but greater sin, Q 4:43 forbids approaching prayer while intoxicated — which progressively removed drinking from most of the day — and Q 5:90-91 completes the prohibition. al-Bukhari 4993 records Aisha (RA), may Allah (SWT) be pleased with her, observing that the first revealed chapters were those mentioning Paradise and Hellfire, and that had the prohibition of wine or unlawful sex come first people would have refused, because belief had to be established before law. That is an explicit statement of pedagogical sequence from within the tradition. Two implications for practice. For an individual considering Islam, the sequence suggests conviction first and behaviour after, which is why pressing someone about their drinking before they believe in God is both rude and methodologically backwards. For a community, it warns against demanding immediate total compliance from new Muslims. Note also that gradualism applied to the revelation itself and does not mean rulings are negotiable now that they are settled; the stages ended.
From the Qur'an
قُلْ فِيهِمَا إِثْمٌ كَبِيرٌ وَمَنَافِعُ لِلنَّاسِ
Qul fihima ithmun kabirun wa manafi'u li'l-nas
Say: in both there is great sin and some benefit for people.
لَا تَقْرَبُوا الصَّلَاةَ وَأَنتُمْ سُكَارَىٰ حَتَّىٰ تَعْلَمُوا مَا تَقُولُونَ
La taqrabu al-salata wa antum sukara hatta ta'lamu ma taqulun
Do not approach prayer while intoxicated, until you know what you are saying.
From the Sunnah
The first of it to be revealed was a chapter mentioning Paradise and Hellfire, until when people had turned to Islam the lawful and unlawful were revealed. Had the first thing revealed been do not drink wine, they would have said we will never leave wine.
