The handful of dust

Analysis
Q 8:17 is understood by the classical commentators (al-Tabari, Ibn Kathir) as referring to the throwing of dust or pebbles at Badr, an incident detailed in the sirah literature of Ibn Ishaq and in some hadith collections with varying chains. The Qur'anic verse is certain; the surrounding narrative detail is historical reporting of mixed strength. The doctrinal point in the verse is the attribution of causation to God even where a human act is visible.
