GORAP — The Basic Dawah Conversation · Shahadah

Summarise the GORAP and explain what being a Muslim means

Handle with care. Never hide the obligations to make the decision easier. A shahadah taken without understanding often ends in someone leaving and feeling deceived.

In short

The claim being examined

Before any invitation, the person must know what they would be agreeing to. Nobody should take a shahadah they do not understand.

The Islamic position

Recap each GORAP step and get explicit agreement, then explain the five pillars in plain, practical language.

Analysis

The manual is careful that the pillars are explained before the testimony, not after, so that the shahadah is informed consent rather than a moment of emotional pressure. Presenting the obligations honestly — including their concessions — also prevents the pattern the manual warns against later, where a new Muslim is overwhelmed within a week and disappears.

From the Qur'an

Qur'an 2:256

لَا إِكْرَاهَ فِي الدِّينِ ۖ قَد تَّبَيَّنَ الرُّشْدُ مِنَ الْغَيِّ

There is no compulsion in religion. The right course has become clear from the wrong.

From the Sunnah

Sahih al-Bukhari 8, Sahih Muslim 16 · Sahih

Islam is built upon five: the testimony that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, establishing prayer, giving zakat, hajj, and fasting Ramadan.
